What Colour Tie to Wear With a Grey Suit - Gresham Blake Online

Grey is the most underrated suit a man can own. Where navy leads with a bit of authority, grey hangs back and lets you do the talking, which makes it the perfect canvas for a really good tie. The trick is knowing how much colour your shade of grey can carry. Here is how to pair a tie with a grey suit, from the palest summer grey to a deep charcoal.

Light grey: let the colour sing

Pale and mid greys are a gift, because almost any colour lifts cleanly off them. This is your chance to wear the ties that would feel too bold elsewhere. Soft pinks look beautiful here, so the Pink Rose and the Ivory GB Logo tie are natural partners. If you want real personality, the Pink and Yellow Floral Bugs or the playful Pink and Blue Spots bring genuine joy to a light grey suit.

Mid grey: the everyday workhorse

Mid grey is the most versatile suit in your wardrobe, and it takes pattern beautifully without much fuss. This is the place for ties with character that still behave themselves: the Blue Beetles for a bit of fun, the Blue Retro Stripe for warmth, or the graphic Green and Navy Zig-Zag when you want a sharper, more modern look.

Charcoal: depth and a little drama

A charcoal suit is almost a neutral in its own right, dark enough to hold a rich or dramatic tie without any clash. This is where you reach for depth. The Burgundy GB Logo tie looks superb against charcoal, and for something with real impact the Black and Red Cranes, the Purple Scorpion or the warm Retro Squares all earn their place.

Grey at a wedding

Grey is a wonderful wedding suit, particularly in spring and summer, and it pairs best with soft, romantic ties. The Ivory GB Logo against dove grey is quietly perfect, while the Light Blue Rose brings a fresh, seasonal feel. Both look considered rather than showy, which is exactly the note you want as a guest or a groom.

A simple rule of thumb

The lighter the grey, the more colour it can carry, so save your boldest ties for your palest suits and let charcoal handle the rich, dramatic ones. And as always, choose a woven silk over a printed one. On an understated suit like grey, the texture of a jacquard is what stops the whole look from falling flat.

Every tie here is 100% silk and designed in our Brighton studio.
