The dogs
Chosen for their gentleness
More than 2,646 experimental procedures involving dogs were carried out in Great Britain in 2024, using 1,651 animals. Beagles account for the overwhelming majority.
They are chosen for gentleness. They forgive readily and rarely object. Those are precisely the qualities that make them such good company in a family home, and precisely the reason they suffer.
In 2023, Beagle Freedom Project UK brought seven beagles out of a facility in Spain and into foster care in Kent, where several met grass for the first time in twelve years.
Why these three words
Punk was always an argument about who gets to be heard
In 1977, Jamie Reid’s ransom-note lettering turned the national anthem into a provocation. It hangs in the V&A today.
Nearly fifty years on, the same three words have been turned outward, cut by Gresham Blake and photographed by Rankin. Few voices are more marginalised than an animal that cannot fend for itself, cannot complain and cannot ask anyone for help.

Four names, one shirt
Rankin
Royalty of British portrait photography: King Charles III, Kate Moss, David Bowie, the Rolling Stones. Co-founder of Dazed & Confused, founder of Hunger, with work at MoMA, the National Portrait Gallery and the V&A. That he has turned that eye on a laboratory beagle is what gives this campaign its volume.
Collette Cooper
Manchester-born musician, songwriter, artist and actor, signed to Thelonious Punk Records and championed by BBC Radio 2, 6 Music and Jazz FM. She played Janis Joplin in the Off West End award-winning Tomorrow May Be My Last, and is recording her latest album with Grammy-winning producer Tony Visconti.
Lois Winstone
Actor, artist and musician. Her credits include Last Orders, The Bill, Beyond The Rave and the fourth series of Game of Thrones. She fronts her own rock band, Lois & The Love, and recently exhibited her artwork at The Lily Foundation Exhibition.
Gresham Blake
Bold British tailoring in Brighton’s North Laine for more than twenty-five years, with a second store in Soho. Dressing Christian Slater, Jimmy Page, Danny Dyer, Mel C, Norman Cook, Madness, Steve Coogan and projects with Banksy, Johnny Depp and Hideo Kojima. He also makes many a suit for Ray Winstone, which lends this collaboration the pleasant quality of a family affair.
