The Wedding Tie Guide - Gresham Blake Online

The tie is where a wedding outfit becomes personal. The suit can be hired, borrowed or shared across the wedding party, but the tie is the detail that says something about the man wearing it. Get it right and it pulls the whole look together. Here is how to choose well, whether you are the groom, standing beside him, or simply there to enjoy the day.

Start with the suit colour

The suit decides the palette, so begin there.

With a navy suit, you have the most freedom. Burgundy and deep red look effortlessly right, soft pinks and pale blues feel romantic and seasonal, and a tonal navy tie with real texture is quietly very smart. The Burgundy GB Logo, Pink Rose and Navy Rose all earn their place here.

With a grey suit, lean into colour, because grey is a neutral that lets a tie sing. The Ivory GB Logo tie is soft and elegant against dove grey, while a bolder choice like the Pink and Yellow Floral Bugs brings real joy to a charcoal.

With a tan, brown or earthy suit, warm tones are the answer. The Retro Squares in terracotta and mustard, or the Blue Retro Stripe with its blue, brown and cream, both look made for a rustic or autumnal day.

Then think about the season

Spring and summer weddings suit lighter, softer grounds, the pinks, ivories and pale blues of the rose series, or the playful Pink and Cream Butterfly for a garden setting. Autumn and winter call for depth and warmth, which is where rich burgundies, the Retro Squares and darker motif ties come into their own.

Groom, groomsmen or guest

The groom should wear the tie that feels most like him, and the day is the one occasion where a genuine statement is welcome. The Black and Red Cranes, a symbol of luck and long life, is a wonderful choice with meaning built in. The Blue Car is perfect for the groom who wants a bit of personality.

The groomsmen want to complement the groom without copying him. Pick a shared colour family and let each man wear his own version. The rose series is ideal for this, with Pink, Light Blue and Navy grounds that clearly belong together.

A guest should look considered without upstaging anyone. A textured tonal tie or a soft floral does the job perfectly, smart, warm and entirely appropriate.

Coordinate, do not match

The most common mistake is matching the tie too precisely to a bridesmaid dress or a colour scheme. You want to coordinate, not clone. A tie that shares a tone with the wider palette but brings its own texture and detail will always look more sophisticated than an exact match. This is exactly why a woven jacquard works so well, the pattern gives you a range of tones to play with rather than a single flat block of colour.

Every tie in our collection is 100% silk, designed in Brighton, in limited runs so you are unlikely to meet someone wearing the same one.
